Thank you for taking an interest in my photography blog. This time I will be showing you a few photographs from a shoot I did last week. It was for a local Liverpool business called ‘Intratech’. They contacted my through a marketing company to produce a set of images to show off there products which is heat lamps for the car painting industry.

We did different type product images for them, some are white background images to clearly show the products for leaflets and websites. We also worked on some location photography images as well, showing the products in a real world situation. We set up the shoot in a car painters near where the clients business is based. I have done some tweaks to the final images in Photoshop, I do offer high level post-production services to all my clients.

The images turned out well, just how I wanted them to…and the clients are very happy and have already booked another product photography shoot with Pack-Photo. The paint booth worked out for the images because it was fairly clean for a busy car painters booth, and it has its own lighting which was just about bright enough for my cameras to work with.

Hello again,

This week I am showing a drinks photography image that I did not long ago. As you can see it is an example of a before and after the Photoshop retouching. When you look close at the detail you can see how much work has gone into the post-production side of a photography shoot. This amount of work takes around 1.5 hours in Photoshop, but when you need 12 final images the time soon adds up. When seeing the before and after photographs it shows the skill level we have at Pack-Photo and the experience level needed to do high end product and drinks photography. Product Photography for new Liverpool Brand

I have recently completed a photography commission to shoot the product and location photography for a new Liverpool Brand called ‘Hunt & Hustle’. It produces scissors designed for barbers, they look really nice and are set to make a big impact in the industry. We started the shoot by arriving at the location set which was a small barbers on Larks Lane, Liverpool. I set up my photography equipment, bouncing light off the ceiling, using f/8 to get slight depth of field. There was some technical trickery involved as the lights used in the barber shop had a strong orange cast. All flash lights are daylight balanced so the mixture of light sources would need to be addresses, I used a white balance which was mainly balanced towards the daylight, there was lighting coming in through the window as well.

The shoot was the first time a company has asked my to shoot video as well as photography. I wanted the opportunity to enhance my video production skills so I agreed to take on this role as well as the photography. Switching from video mode to photography mode was difficult. It is something which needs plenty of practice to perfect. After shooting for around 3 hours we packed up all the photography equipment and headed to the photography studio to carry on with the product photography side of the shoot.

The studio shots required the products to be shot on a white background, wood, grass/moss, water and stone. There was going to be a large amount of images taken because of all the different backgrounds being used. As we started the product shoot we discovered that the stone background was not right for the branding so we decided to leave those shots out, for the shots of the product on water we did experiment shooting the product in water and having it balanced on a small block which would be hidden by the camera. It worked, but when the water was still you couldn’t tell that it was water, it looked like a flat reflective sheet. When I made ripples in the water to make it visible to the camera the product got wet, it didn’t look right.

I had to think fast and knew that I could take shots of the scissors and then drop them onto a shot of the water which had ripples, I did the two shots separately, taking photographs of the product, then of the water as I added ripples and combine the two shots in Photoshop. The results speak for themselves, great images.

After the product photography shoot we went back to the barber shop and did more location photography, the break gave a chance the shop owner to keep some customers happy be carrying on providing his service. It was a long day but was totally worth it. Such a good job. A big thanks goes to Liverpool Marketing Company who commissioned me to shoot for them.

Editorial Photography, front cover image

Hello again,

I have been known to have my image featured on the front cover of some editorial photography and I wanted to show them off. This example was a editorial photography shoot in Liverpool for a company called Intratech. They sell heat lamps for the car bodywork industry.

I have done product photography for this business before and they brought me in again to shoot for the front cover of Repair & Refinish Review, it’s a trade magazine for the car bodywork industry. The lighting was tricky for this photo-shoot, I used natural light as my main light source, I also balanced this with a studio flash head which I used as a fill-in flash, but there is also the light from the heat lamp to consider which I was able to balance as well.

When I was shooting I had be considerate about the composition, the fact that I needed to leave room for the Magazine title at the top of the image, also there would be other text on the front cover. I think I got the balance right and as you can see it has worked well as a front cover shot for a trade editorial.

After the shoot I process the images from RAW format into TIFF, I then work on them in Photoshop to get a nicer finish to the photograph. Only when I start working with extra layer would I then save the photograph as a Photoshop file format. People like Megan Trianor seem to have a problem with Photoshop, but not me….

I have been monitoring my website and how well it ranks on google, today I have found out that I am on the first page of google with the search term ‘Liverpool photographer‘, I have done this with my own SEO (search engine optimisation) skills but I owe a big thank you to the online community who visit my website which is why it ranks so highly. It took a lot of work and its a great sign of things to come.

I have been ranking very well with search terms like ‘liverpool commercial photographer‘ ‘liverpool product photography’ ‘merseyside product photographer’ ‘merseyside commercial photography’, in fact I have been number one on these terms for months now. But the big one for me has always been the search term ‘Liverpool photographer’ and I am feeling pretty good about it.

Hello again,

I was asked to be the photographer at a charity bike ride called ‘Bucket and Spade’. Locals ride from Southport to Blackpool and back again to raise money for a good cause. When they asked me to do the Southport photography I thought ‘why not’, I want to help out for a good cause and to be an active member in the community.

The images were to be used in the local paper and to feature in a magazine ‘Simply Southport’, the charity organizers were very happy with the results as was I. It was a challenge as it was a very hot summers day and I was only taking pictures, the riders did find it harder to ride in such heat but there was some stops along the way, it is the taking part that counts.

Liverpool Business Photoshoot: Case study

I wanted to do a case study on one of my photography briefs and I have chosen the photoshoot I did of local estate agents ‘Harrison and Co’. They had just moved location and opened a new office in Liverpool and they asked me to do take photographs off the office, the building and headshots of the staff. I set up my studio flash heads in the office, bounced the lights off the ceiling and balanced them with the daylight as it was a sunny day. Most of the shots were taken on 1/125th of a second, F5.6 and at ISO 400.

I like the tones in the images, mostly neutral colours, it is only the staff clothes that have any colour added to the photography. I have kept the images looking minimal, there are just hints of office equipment used to frame the composition, also as they are not in focus it helps lead the viewer to look at the subjects I am photographing.

I also took headshot photographs of the staff which turned out really well, using the office as a backdrop, looks much better than plain white background business headshots.

Merseyside photographer, Triumph Motobike shoot.

As a professional photographer working in Merseyside and around the North of England I shoot many different types of products and services for business. I enjoy it not matter what the business is, but when you are asked to to a photography commission for something else that you are passionate about then it can be something really special.

I did this photo shoot of an old Triumph motorbike which has some parts upgraded, you can see the modern suspension and the wheels. It is a cool looking bike. I have shot these bikes in a photography studio environment.  I used lots of studio flashes to get a even lighting on the background I didn’t use any softboxes, I wanted some lights to be a fake sunlight and the other lights are used to fill in deep shadow areas on the bike itself so the detail in the engine can be seen, I have back lit the bike slightly to create strong shadows in the foreground.

Once the shoot was finished and when I had processed the images I got to work in Photoshop, I changed the colour of the background as I shoot the bike on white. I changed it to a colour that would match the colours on the paintwork of the bike which helps to asethetics of the photograph. Its complimentary and helps to join subject and background together to work in a harmony. I gives the photograph balance, I think the other reason why it works so well is the composition, the position of the bike in the frame. Its all aspects of the design that goes into an image when it is being created. There are so many variants but with experience and control they all come together and make for premium photography.

Liverpool Product Photography, Location shoot

I wanted to talk about some location photography which Pack-Photo has worked on, this shoot was for a Liverpool Marketing company. The client is called ‘Power-tech’.

The shoot is for home work-out equipment so the location for the shoot was set in a garden, the model was sourced from a local gym so she is the real deal. It was good to get a model who knows about how to do an effective work-out because she could guide me in what exercises are going to work with the equipment we are photographing.

I didn’t want to use too much photography equipment, I used a Nikon flash gun with a wireless flash trigger and placed them on a lighting stand. The flash is positioned to the right of the camera and I have balanced the power of the light to work with the ambient light from the Sun, I used a diffuser on the flash and the flash was on at full power, to control the brightness I choose to move the flash closer or further away rather than altering the flash gun power levels. The time was around 3.30pm and the light was fading.

I wanted the focus to be reduced for the background which helps the subject to stand out, I used f/8 which gives the look I had in mind. I am very happy with how the photograph turned out, I did some tweaks to the photograph in Photoshop, I made a new layer, only selected the background and altered the levels, saturation, contrast as it needed a boost to look like a technically perfect final photograph.

Hello again,

I am going to chat about the image that is on all of the Pack-Photo marketing material. Its an image of to wooden hands touching, it is made to be recognized for referencing a famous painting by Michelangelo ‘The Creation of Adam’. Its a post-modern technique which is to use concepts that are already well known and to re-use them, sometimes it looks like a straight copy and other times it looks like a clever reference which makes the viewer feel intelligent when they get the reference.

I took the image on a large format digital camera, I took several shots of the hands in different positions which were later imported into Photoshop. I cut out the wooden hands and dropped them into a graduated grey background. It was a simple image to produce but very effective, this image is more about the concept and aesthetics than anything else.

I wanted to show off my Photography skills but also to show that I can do more than just technical product photography but conceptual photography too. I have chosen to use the image in my marketing material as it symbolizes beings connecting to each other which is the reason why people want to use photography for business, it connects to the viewer, photography can reach out to an audience in a way other mediums can not. Premium Photoshop retouching, Liverpool

Hello everyone,

I wanted to do a show and tell of one of my images. It is of a puddle which I have made into the shape of the UK using Photoshop and my retouching skills, it takes a lot of work to create an image like this and I am going to reveal how it was made.

The first and most important part of this image was to have the concept before starting to take images, having a vision of what you want to create and that if all goes to plan it will be a successful image is so very important, when making this I almost gave up as I became concerned it would not work. It took around 7 hours to retouch in Photoshop and I used 5 different images to create it. I used my Mamiya RZ 67 Pro II medium format film camera, I shot it using slide film and scanned in the slides to my computer.

I took shots of different puddles which had different shapes, I did this so I could cut out small pieces and drop them onto one chosen puddle image from which to build on, using layer masks I could blend the pieces into the main image, the final result is a subtle shape which was my intention, I wanted to include Northern Ireland but I knew that another puddle next to this one wouldn’t look the best. One of my images of puddles had a wet leaf in it and I thought that it would work well.

When I showed the image to others, even to other photographers, they would ask me “how did you find a puddle in that shape” well I didn’t but I shows that the image works so well, deceiving even other professionals is a great accomplishment.

The image won a photography flair competition held by Creativematch website. Thank you for taking the time to read my blog.
