Liverpool Business Photoshoot: Case study

I wanted to do a case study on one of my photography briefs and I have chosen the photoshoot I did of local estate agents ‘Harrison and Co’. They had just moved location and opened a new office in Liverpool and they asked me to do take photographs off the office, the building and headshots of the staff. I set up my studio flash heads in the office, bounced the lights off the ceiling and balanced them with the daylight as it was a sunny day. Most of the shots were taken on 1/125th of a second, F5.6 and at ISO 400.

I like the tones in the images, mostly neutral colours, it is only the staff clothes that have any colour added to the photography. I have kept the images looking minimal, there are just hints of office equipment used to frame the composition, also as they are not in focus it helps lead the viewer to look at the subjects I am photographing.

I also took headshot photographs of the staff which turned out really well, using the office as a backdrop, looks much better than plain white background business headshots.

Merseyside photographer, Triumph Motobike shoot.

As a professional photographer working in Merseyside and around the North of England I shoot many different types of products and services for business. I enjoy it not matter what the business is, but when you are asked to to a photography commission for something else that you are passionate about then it can be something really special.

I did this photo shoot of an old Triumph motorbike which has some parts upgraded, you can see the modern suspension and the wheels. It is a cool looking bike. I have shot these bikes in a photography studio environment.  I used lots of studio flashes to get a even lighting on the background I didn’t use any softboxes, I wanted some lights to be a fake sunlight and the other lights are used to fill in deep shadow areas on the bike itself so the detail in the engine can be seen, I have back lit the bike slightly to create strong shadows in the foreground.

Once the shoot was finished and when I had processed the images I got to work in Photoshop, I changed the colour of the background as I shoot the bike on white. I changed it to a colour that would match the colours on the paintwork of the bike which helps to asethetics of the photograph. Its complimentary and helps to join subject and background together to work in a harmony. I gives the photograph balance, I think the other reason why it works so well is the composition, the position of the bike in the frame. Its all aspects of the design that goes into an image when it is being created. There are so many variants but with experience and control they all come together and make for premium photography.

Liverpool Product Photography, Location shoot

I wanted to talk about some location photography which Pack-Photo has worked on, this shoot was for a Liverpool Marketing company. The client is called ‘Power-tech’.

The shoot is for home work-out equipment so the location for the shoot was set in a garden, the model was sourced from a local gym so she is the real deal. It was good to get a model who knows about how to do an effective work-out because she could guide me in what exercises are going to work with the equipment we are photographing.

I didn’t want to use too much photography equipment, I used a Nikon flash gun with a wireless flash trigger and placed them on a lighting stand. The flash is positioned to the right of the camera and I have balanced the power of the light to work with the ambient light from the Sun, I used a diffuser on the flash and the flash was on at full power, to control the brightness I choose to move the flash closer or further away rather than altering the flash gun power levels. The time was around 3.30pm and the light was fading.

I wanted the focus to be reduced for the background which helps the subject to stand out, I used f/8 which gives the look I had in mind. I am very happy with how the photograph turned out, I did some tweaks to the photograph in Photoshop, I made a new layer, only selected the background and altered the levels, saturation, contrast as it needed a boost to look like a technically perfect final photograph.

Hello again,

I am going to chat about the image that is on all of the Pack-Photo marketing material. Its an image of to wooden hands touching, it is made to be recognized for referencing a famous painting by Michelangelo ‘The Creation of Adam’. Its a post-modern technique which is to use concepts that are already well known and to re-use them, sometimes it looks like a straight copy and other times it looks like a clever reference which makes the viewer feel intelligent when they get the reference.

I took the image on a large format digital camera, I took several shots of the hands in different positions which were later imported into Photoshop. I cut out the wooden hands and dropped them into a graduated grey background. It was a simple image to produce but very effective, this image is more about the concept and aesthetics than anything else.

I wanted to show off my Photography skills but also to show that I can do more than just technical product photography but conceptual photography too. I have chosen to use the image in my marketing material as it symbolizes beings connecting to each other which is the reason why people want to use photography for business, it connects to the viewer, photography can reach out to an audience in a way other mediums can not. Premium Photoshop retouching, Liverpool

Hello everyone,

I wanted to do a show and tell of one of my images. It is of a puddle which I have made into the shape of the UK using Photoshop and my retouching skills, it takes a lot of work to create an image like this and I am going to reveal how it was made.

The first and most important part of this image was to have the concept before starting to take images, having a vision of what you want to create and that if all goes to plan it will be a successful image is so very important, when making this I almost gave up as I became concerned it would not work. It took around 7 hours to retouch in Photoshop and I used 5 different images to create it. I used my Mamiya RZ 67 Pro II medium format film camera, I shot it using slide film and scanned in the slides to my computer.

I took shots of different puddles which had different shapes, I did this so I could cut out small pieces and drop them onto one chosen puddle image from which to build on, using layer masks I could blend the pieces into the main image, the final result is a subtle shape which was my intention, I wanted to include Northern Ireland but I knew that another puddle next to this one wouldn’t look the best. One of my images of puddles had a wet leaf in it and I thought that it would work well.

When I showed the image to others, even to other photographers, they would ask me “how did you find a puddle in that shape” well I didn’t but I shows that the image works so well, deceiving even other professionals is a great accomplishment.

The image won a photography flair competition held by Creativematch website. Thank you for taking the time to read my blog.

I am starting a blog for Pack-Photo which is a premium commercial photography in Merseyside, Liverpool, Manchester and the Northwest. I hope you enjoy looking at great photographs or learning what Pack-photo does as a business.

I will start with an image which is what Pack-Photo does best, premium product photography. It a white background still life image of a gaming headset, one thing which makes the image premium is the lighting control used to enhance the look of the product. This is created by using carefully positioned reflectors and studio flash heads very close to the product itself. Other studio flashes are used to light the background.

Once the lighting has been perfected and the correct exposure has been worked out, then its just a matter of pressing the shutter and the shot is finished, well the first step is finished, next the image is processed and uploaded into Photoshop where the magic happens, the post-production of the images improves the look of the image greatly. The image is cut out so the background is an even white, the levels are checked and any blemishes are removed. This image has had a lot to tweaks to the top of what is the head band, it has provided with a smooth and consistent look which helps make the product look slick and stylish.
